David its common to find wire bound but on period Mg42,s there are some variations on this steel bands etc but wire is a wartime feature too.

Sean, thanks for your comment. I have a Gustloff manufactured , 1943 dated MG42, that has the wire wrap on the wrist of the stock, ..very neatly done.
There was some discussion on the Machine Gun forum a while back on this subject, and the question of whether this was more typical of Yugo post war re-work or German WW2 , was debated ,..with little in the way of conclusions.

No problems, I draw my conclusions from owning a Steyer Mg42 , the butt stock is wire bound and has matching serial numbers to the gun. I also have a pair of Cra (maget) 42s one has a wire bound stock one has a steel band ,both are correct WW2 manufacture. I two have gone through dialemas about period and post war Mg42 gear but the more you handle the more the post war Yugo/Bundeswehr stuff becomes easily identifiable.
