    8 mm??

I'm a little confused. What is the mm of the amo for a mauser K98?
Because one seller told me that it's standard 7.92mm and an other one told me it's 7.62mm and one told me it's 8mm??
Would these 8mm bullets fit in this type of rifle? I'm planning to buy these, or won't they fit?

    many thanks

I believe that the ammo posted in your thread is not for the K98, but for the Mannlicher carbine (if I'm not mistaken.) The correct designation for the caliber for the K98 is 8x57mm, and the ammo you have I believe is 8x56mm. I know that in the US, commercial brand ammunition for the K98 such as Winchester and Federal is marked as 8mm Mauser.

      Ammo

The ammo pictured is 8X56R or 8mm Steyr..For the Austrian Model 1895 rifle and Carbines, It was also used by Hungary etc....It replaced a earlier calibre..8X50R... The Mauser Gew 98 and the 98k use the 7.92x57mm round which is 8mm Mauser...BILL

Yep, I have a box. I thought they were for the Mannlicher Shoener rifle, but nope.

            Nomenclature

The standard rifle cartridge adopted by Germany in 1888 and modified significantly later to larger diameter, pointed shape and, finally, to a boattail bullet is the 7.9mm Infanterie Patrone (official German military nomenclature). The German civilian nomenclature is 8x57JS (8x57JR is rimmed). Other countries that used the same cartridge often named it 7.92mm. In the U.S. it is called 8mm Mauser, which appears on boxes of US commercial ammunition.
The ammunition shown at the start of this thread is solely for Austrian Mannlicher rifles and will not interchange with the 7.9 Infantry Cartridge used in Germany from 1888 to 1945.
7.62 is .30 caliber and ususally refers to the .308 Winchester cartridge also known as 7.62 NATO and 7.62x51mm and is post-WW2. Note 7.62 is the bore diameter, and several firearms using different length and shape cartridges have this bore diameter. Some 98k's were rebarreled to 7.62 NATO, notably by the Israeli's.
            7.9mm or 8mm is .32 caliber (.323 inch).
