      Hello Ed,

nice set. Always a pleasure for a UK member to see Japanese items.

Have you managed to discern what the Kanji translates as?

No...I'm trying to figure it out now.

My wife just translated it for me. It means "116". Maybe a unit marking.

            Kanji characters painted on grips?

Over the years I've seen quite a number of the Papa's here in the US and, from memory, all of them seem to have the Kanji characters painted (in white) on the grips. I have observed these characters only on the Papa's; never on the T.14's or T.94 Japanese service pistols.

Any ideas what the characters mean and why they seem to frequently appear on Papa's?
