    Browning gp35

    Hello.
I am from Serbia, Yugoslavia. A few years back (1998) i came in possesion of Browning gp35. It belonged to a former police man. When he retired he took the gun and registered it as a personal firearm. Serial number is 89167. I have been looking at the pictures of browning's pistols and it looks the same as those models made in 1935.(tangent sight) I was wondering if there is any chance of determing the exact year of production? The only problem is that the gun is now chrome plated, and all the german markings are gone. I know that this has reduced the value of the gun. Other than that the gun is fully functional. The barrel is not perfect but in very good condition. One magazine is original, the other one is custom made and it can take 18 rounds (no limit in this country )
By the way this is one of the best forums on this subject i have seen.

    Thanks in advance

    Fazan,

In first place, welcom to the forum!
Concerning the Browning GP35 (or HP-35), as far as I know, all the guns with tangent sights are from the early production (pre-1941). Although some with this kind of sight were made by the Germans after the FN ocupation, it is said that they were made with inventory parts. Most of the HP-35s made during the war already lacked the tangent sight.

Maybe someone else can add something else.

    Regards,

    Douglas.

Thanks Douglas! I wanted to know this because I heard that pre war pieces are better than the one made during the war. Here in Serbia in 1980-s and 1990-s this kind of weapons (old ones from WW2) were wery cheap. Even now days You can find P38-s and P08-s. The price range is from 200e (180 $ or so) to 350e. Browning guns are not a rare thing especially WW2 and earlier models because importing of foreign arms has started not so long ago. (if You wanted to buy a gun there was only Crvena zastava models). So far I am very pleased with this gun.

        Hello Fazan,

Not all GP 35 were made before 1945.
Here a link with some recent ones :

To be sure your gun is pre 45 you have to check the type of extractor wich is used.
The older ones are mounted from the back, you can see a little round piece right of the hammer.
The new ones are mounted from the right, you can recognise 'm to the line behind the ejection port.

        Regards,

        FRANK
