    Is this .50 cal Browning?

Hi guys, today visited and searched a B-17 crashsite. Here's the thread: http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...104#post975104

One local man gave me a brass shell and a bullet. He told me that they are from the US bomber, the brass was longer and going thinner to the top, but he has cut the front part of it. On the bottom it is marked 3, a star and 43. The length of the bullet is 5,7 cm /2,24"/. Is this US aircraft guns ammo?

Hi Theo, it is not a US .50 cal but a Soviet 14.5mm case.

    Cheers, Ade.

Not a surprise! The man worked as local cop, so maybe has plenty of ammo in the shed

I forgot to say measure the width of the round as that looks to be a .50 cal head.

        Cheers, Ade.

The width at the widest part of the bullet is 18 mm, if managed to measure it correct

Not .50 cal then. The head does not match the case that is for sure.

            Cheers, Ade.

Hi Ade... ...actually... it is 13 mm! Looking at it, I thought that 18 mm must be much wider... So, measured again - t is about 13 mm

Hi Theo, it will be .50 cal then 12.7mm = .50 cal. I thought that it looked like one in the first place.

                  Cheers, Ade.

So, the casing is from something else, but it is safe to assume, that the bullet is from the bomber?

Correct, the bullet head is US .50cal. But the cartridge case is Soviet 14.5mm

                      Cheers, Ade.
