It's the 4th of July weekend, (lots of noise) I figured its time to test my DOT 44 RC which has not been fired since who knows when (if ever). First shot, arms length away, off the deck, into the ground, safety glasses, head turned, BANG...OK. Second shot, now I'm now aiming at an old dog food dish.....bang....gone! LOUD. What a gun. I haven't even looked at the ammo I used. Was it the 1940 ammo or the new stuff I bought?. Who cares it's one sweet rifle! Once again LOUD!

Just remember to clean it. Most 8mm is corrosive.

I really enjoy taking my K98 out to the range for a few hours of target practice! However, I have decided to use only modern Federal or Winchester ammo rather than the surplus stuff on the market now. When I first bought my rifle, I fired East German steel case stuff in it, and had one heck of a time working the bolt to eject the spent cartridge, and also used to fire Turkish ammo. Both were very corrosive, and I recall cleaning and cleaning to get rid of the residue on both types of ammo.
Of course the Federal/Winchester is more expensive, but since I also use my rifle to hunt big game, I find that it it beneficial to me as to how the rifle will handle hunting type ammunition.

Congratulations! They were designed to be used but I would re-iterate the importance of cleaning any rifle REALLY well after using corrosive ammunition, I'd even scrub the bolt face with a slightly oily old toothbrush (or similar) just to make sure (also wipe down the magazine follower).
I'm going to be a bit of a contraversialist here and say that personally I think the SMLE just has the edge on 'slickness' over a k98. My Grandfather was a RSM in the 1914 British Army and they were expected to fire 14 aimed shots a minute, easy to do with a 10 round magazine and stripper clip loading but a bit of an effort with the k98 with its 5 round capacity. I can manage 10 or 11 shots during a 'mad minute' and that's will very little practice.
Strange that the 8mm cartridge is so lively, I think it's got even more recoil than the 30-06 in a P17 or Springfield '03. It's also a very easy cartridge to re-load for those that like to roll their own.
Happy shooting! Peter

lets not start a enfield vs mauser thread, cause they never ever end....
i shoot 1953 s. american fmj 8mm, it is corrosive, and at times the bolt can get hard to open, but a singel finder sweep in teh chamber and its good to go, 18 out of 20 shots, the bolt is as smooth as the day it was made, its such a treat to enjoy such a great rifle.
the thing with k98k's is... you cant just have one

I agree, both will have their proponents and it's a silly debate anyway. I was just talking personally. The Mauser system and the k98 in particular is such a well designed piece of equipment it is VERY hard to find fault with it.Originally posted by sigismundlets not start a enfield vs mauser thread, cause they never ever end....

I couldn't have just one K98, I had to add a Russian Capture bcd41 rifle to safe recently! Now I'm on the lookout for an Enfield!
