I really don't see a "right" or "wrong" here. Some folks enjoy collecting late war weapons; some don't. Late war Japanese rifles and bayonets can bring healthy prices if sold to the right collector. On the other hand, you couldn't give away a late war Japanese fixed-sight rifle a few years ago, and still can't--to some people.
Others prefer the better fit and finish of early or pre-war weapons. It depends on your particular historical interest and/or taste.
    Peace!

Doug, you are completely correct it all depends on what turns your crank and the scope or depth of your hobby. One man's junk is always another man's treasure. If I were starting today I want one each early, mid, and late war Mauser manufacture Kar.98k and a specimen each of the most common variants used by the Germans in WW-2.In the late 60s,when I started all were cheap and common.Jap rifles were selling for as little as $10.OO;while 98k Mausers were $35.00 on average.
