    S/42G Bayonet?

Does anyone know what should be stamped on a bayonet and scabbord that would belong on a S/42G K98 rifle. Also would the frog be stamped 1935 or would it have an S code also. Thanks very much. Johnny.

    Bayonet Question

    Hello,

I don't think that there was a specific bayonet issued out for specific rifles. It was more whatever the Regimental Quartermaster had, is what you got. So you could have had any maker. That early in the Third Riech, there might have only been a couple of manufacturers.

I believe The markings For such an early bayonet Frog would have been a date. I have a Mundlos 38 Bayonet and the frog that it came with had 1938 stamped on the back.

    Hope this has helped,

    Cam

I have had over the years two S/42G marked bayonets. One had a unit marking on the frog(Artillery Battery, I don't remember which one), I will see if I can find a picture of one of them.

      Cheers

To my best of my recollection the only bayonets that were matched to the rifles were the ones that were for the Portuguese contract. For a German Army “G” date issue 98K rifle any of the “G” dated “S” code bayonets would be OK with the understanding that the serial numbers won’t match. Some examples: S/155G, S/172-78G, S/184-85G, S/238-39G (etc). “G” dates were not used on the frogs which may or may not be unit marked. FP
