    Why Do We Collect?

    Hello Gentlemen:

Have you ever sat around and thought about all the goodies in your safe or displayed in your home and said to yourself why do I collect? From all the forums I stay tuned in on and all the discussion that really is a hard question when you get down to it.
I,ll give you my reason and hope that fellow mambers will share their light on the subject.
I guess I collect for historical reasons along with the knowledge that old military weapons are a good investment, even more so than the stock markets or banks and you do not have to pay income taxes on them.Sure I like to get a certain handgun out of the safe sometimes and admire it,clean it and put it back in the dark. Also its a good feeling to take a special weapon to the local gun show and tell interested parties about it and flash it around.I don,t consider myself a greedy collector as there are still plenty of nice collector weapons out there.I can honestly say that I never have been jealous of anyones collection,if anything I,m glad they had the chance and monies to receive the item.
Another thing I think all collectors should do and that is to make two lists of all the items, with price and sn,s so when the day comes you will know your collection will not be given away by your next of kin. Also if you live a long life and feel the time is nearing departure you should go ahead and start dispersing of your treasure, after all you can,t take it with you.On the other hand I have heard where pistols where put in the individual, only to be lost to the ages.I,m not writing this thread as of thinking of dying, but more of a thread starter and see views of other members. It may sound crazy, but is it not a very interesting topic? Regards Danny

    Danny,

I´ve been thinking about this frequently during the last couple of years. Some of my pieces were get with some degree of personal "sacrifice" (a trip, a new car, etc...) but I never regret to do so. I simply admire them as part of History something that "was there". It works as a "Time Machine" for me. crazy isn´t it? Sometime I find myself wondering what happened with the people who use them in the Battlefield or that particular piece came from a world that doesn´t exist anymore... does it make sense?

All said, now all those items stay in home where I take care of them for the next generation. Oh yeah, I think they will last for another century... and sometime, somewhere, someone will be asking the same questions...

    Douglas.
