The other thing you have to think of is will you find another one? K98 in any condition seem to be very difficult to find in Australia and unfortunatly it is EXTREMELY difficult to get any firearm into Australia. and prices in Australia are absolutely stupid, a reproduction MP40 can sell for over $1200 AUD So prices for original K98 can be whatever the seller asks.

    Kindest regards
    Jason

      Jarrid,

From the pictures posted, I do not see any evidence that the stock disk or the buttplate are blued. I do see what appear to me to be an unfinished and darkened disk and darkened buttplate though. The triggerguard assembly is milled and also appears to be blued. This is correct. All pictures are a little unclear though. Maybe its the shadows or my eyes. As to the follower - it must be blued to be original for all Steyr K98ks '39-'44. I own several bnz42's. One example is in a no letter block serial range and it has a very lightly finished stock which is completely untouched and original.

      Jason,

Does the bbl have a standard test fire proof on the left side? The proof you see on the top of the receiver is WaA623 which was assigned to Steyr/Steyr as opposed to Steyr/Radom which used 77. In any case the 623 proof is correct for a Steyr of this period. Do the bands have the full serial or just the last two digits? What about the floorplate and triggerguard serial stampings - full serial or last two digits? The 'Ru41' bbl marking appears in some very unique Steyr variations '42-'43. You may have a very special rifle which is a bargain for the price being asked. You may have much less. The devil is in the details.

Being new to K98's I'm not sure what constitues as a "standard" test fire proof; what the rifle has is the eagle grasping the swazstica on the left side of the receiver. the floor-plate and trigger-guard have 3-digit serials and (I'm not 100% on this) the bands also have 3-digits.

I am really regretting taking such hurried and bad photos now. Obviously, clear images would have mad this process much easier.

The question I keep on asking is does the BARREL (not the receiver) have a std test fire proof? This should be located on the left side between the rear site and the receiver. The best thing you can do is completely disassemble the subject rifle and inspect/analyze it piece by piece.

I apologise Scott. I did not understand the jargon being used

Yes, the barrel does have a single proof on its' left side (as well as the right side).

Unfortunately, the disassembly of the rifle is not an option for me before I purchase.

Scott, I can send you the full-sized images that I have taken of the rifle (they are pretty bad but more detail is apparent, just, than on the ones I posted here). I'd be very appreciative if you would have a look. PM me if you're willing.
