    M1 for a Martini Henry???

    Hello,

I was just offered a trade and was wondering if it was worth it. I have a mismatched post war rebuild M1 Garand. A guy I know who has been dying to get a Garand offered me an 1887 Martini Henry Mark 4 for it as a straight trade.

I have looked over the MH and there seems to be nothing wrong with it. It does show its age for being over 115 years old. Is the Martinin Henry worth this? Or should I just leave the deal alone. Thanks

Cam, I haven’t seen either of the rifles, but an even trade probably would not be my first choice unless the M-1 had some really serious problems (or the Martini Henry was in really exceptionally good condition).

Some of the government rebuilt M1 rifles are very nicely done and are legitimate issue rifles. However, some of the imported M-1's were probably ready for the scrap pile when they arrived here. The Martini Henry rifle is a late one and is post Zulu wars - with the earlier ones IMO being the most desirable of the Martini Henry’s. The Martini was probably issued to Indian/colonial troops inasmuch as the regular army received or was soon to receive the Lee-Metford’s. Is there any more information available on either rifle? FP

There was also just 100's of Martini-Henrys found in an aresnal in Napal or somewhere, so the market has just been flooded. Do a search, there were 3 companies offering them last round of catalogs I got.

      So IMO Keep the M-1.
