    MG42 butstock or mg53

    Hi All

I would like to have opinions on below butstock of the MG42. For me this is an original one based upon back and interior bolt (square inside). However no stamps.

    Thanks
    Tom

Original 42 stock. The 53 would not have the pin and just have a hole.

totally incorrect that is for wood stocks, the m53 never made any stocks out of bakelite, or used any for that matter

I have my doubts about the bakelite one......

Imho it is post war for the west german mg3.

My bakelite one has a screw in the back, has several WaA stamp (WaA 11 in the bakelite, + if you remove the back piece , the bakelite parts also habe the bakelite code stamps, and are coded “ehe”

Are your bakelite parts stamped ?

That´s a typical MG42 buttstock which was modified by the Austrian army in postwar use. It consists of origin ww2 metal parts from the wooden buttstock variant and the buttstock body is postwar made of plastic. Really a lot of the wooden buttstocks were destroyed during war and especially postwar use and so the metal parts were reused. You can see the typical metal cup from a wooden buttstock, because it has the 2 typical bent tips inside which were pressed into the wood. The cups from the bakelite buttstocks do not have these typical bent tips inside.
