I just got this drum. Is the black color legit?

Nop, black is not original to MG 50 round drums. Even when they look really nice on MG34 that way, they were originally painted, either blue or tan. This one is a Russian Capture. They stripped off all paint and then blued them. Same goes with barrel carriers.

I would suggest the same as it is blued, with the addition of a red arrow painted on to show direction of the coiled ammo. Arrows that I have seen remaining are usually sprayed white and a little more narrow in form.
