FFL's charging to do a transfer???

Before I got my C&R I used local FFL to do transfers for me and he charged me for that service. I never had problem with it. I was using his service and time and it was normal for me to pay for it, like with any other business. It cost FFL money to be in business, so he can provide you with that service.

I understand what you are describing, and I too find it very odd. My guess is the seller didn't know that he could ship it to your local FFL dealer, or he was afraid to do so. So he had his local FFL send it to your FFL. In this case the seller should have paid the transfer fee for HIS dealer, and you pay the transfer fee for YOUR dealer.
Perhaps you could contact the seller and try to work it out? Or as someone mentioned earlier, work this out before the sale.


As for transfers in general. I don't know of any dealer that is doing transfers for free in the US. Dealers always charge a transfer fee. In the past for some time, it was $20-$25. Then it went up to $50 for a while. Now, many dealers are charging $100 for a transfer.
Alan, if you're still getting transfers from your dealer for $25, you need to go thank your dealer for being such a great guy, buy him a bottle of his favorite vise, send him a Christmas gift this year, and make sure he doesn't read this!
This is why for collector guns, it really pays to have an C&R. Pays for itself with one purchase!

That's insane and pure greed. I typically see $25-35 and there are usually a couple smart private FFLs who price at $15-20 to get some business. Last one I did was I think $15 last year.

Maybe in your area they have a stranglehold, but in normal cities, competition keeps it pretty level.

Transfer cost should depend on the type of firearm and the paperwork involved. Generally, long guns are less than pistols.
