2nd model Luft SMF Amber grip

Here is my newly aquired 2nd Model SMF Luftwaffe dagger with amber grips and portepee. Purchased from JR and Kris over at Meda Militaria.

The dagger is in great condition aside from the small chip at the top of the grip.

My 1st year of collecting is going extremley well. Next up for me will be the MAX show in Sept.

When I first started to collect, I saw a picture of a 2nd model amber grip. I knew I had to get one. Damascus is on the list also

I always had a theory that the glass grips were made to imitate real amber just as they made artificial Ivory grips during the period to imitate real ivory. The glass grips are very nice and very difficult to find one that is perfect.

This does not feel like glass.
I was under the assumption that these were just the normal grips. They change color depending on their condition they were stored in?

                  Due to exposure to sunlight.

                    Yes, sunlight causes this.

I realize they are not glass just a term collectors have adopted over the years - Still wonder if they were made during the period as artificial Amber. Just my thoughts either way they are beautiful here is my Voos with damage free artificial amber grip.

A result of the limitations of the plastics of that period, the light colored cast phenolic resins did not react that well to the ultraviolet spectrum. A common test of different formulations was to see how long it took for color changes to take place as the exterior plastic surface decomposed. So it's just really only on the surface with broken or cut grips still white in the interior. Cut or broken surfaces if left exposed also changie color. FP

                            Hi E _Minor,
The photo posting rules for WAF have changed in the last couple of years.

In the future join the Associate Member on WAF so you can post photos attached to the WAF server. $35.00 a year.
                            Thanks,
                            -Serge

                            From Ed Anderson:

Posts or new threads which contain photos that are hosted by an outside source will be erased! In special cases, at the discretion of moderators or association members, photos from outside hosting might be and can be copied and pasted back into such threads by moderators or any association member. The goal is not censorship but preservation of thread integrity.
This policy is instituted in order to preserve the threads for later reading and thus also preserving the integrity of the overall forum, being one of the best sources on the planet for this hobby. It has unfortunately happened over the last years that a very large amount of threads became useless due to the missing photos. This policy will stop that degeneration of the forum.
