Gustav Spitzer Army Dagger - is it real?

A new collector said he had doubts about the originality of this dagger. Anyone have an opinion?

Looks like maybe a Herder cross guard? According to Wittmanns dagger book, Spitzer daggers have their own cross guards and should be early daggers. This one looks late to me.

I own a duplicate of the dagger posted. Same plated crossguard and 14 leaf pommel, but mine has a single screw later scabbard and a tapered tang blade. Same grip also.

In my opinion Spitzer didn’t have their own guards. They always used generic guards. Even on their early daggers (Pack type 1 guard).

I was under the impression that generic B cross guards have a 'dip' between the head and beak, Herder is different in that the whole top of the head is flat.

Some, including myself, do not prescribe to the Herder guard as a type, and that is indeed a generic B. The reference you refer to isn't completely up to date IMO.
