A friend of mine sent me thes photos of a bayonet and portepee that was brought to his shop today. Has brown frog and appears to be early model due to rivits. Very nice etching. These are best shots so far. Opinions please

Steve,
Tough to say definitively from here pics whether this is good or not, there are some very good reproductions coming from the Czech Republic. This specific model has been known to have been faked too. The grip with spanner nuts doesn't make things any more difficult for the fakers too.
That said, the whole rig does look good, a shame about the mortise key.

Pack C 31
IMO, original etch here. This is a later etch refereed to the C 31 plane etch. The later examples of this etch did not have the letters (C 31) on the plane. By the pics, the ovicular part of the etch is deeply executed. I actually talked with the God Father of etched bayonets the other day and he shared with me two things the fakers always screw up with regards to this etch. This example exhibits neither of them.
Only problem is that unfortunately this blade has been heavily clean equating into a lighter etch and the obvious lack of mortise key. Shame, these etches are rare and bring big money. I grabbed mine from Cashi, and it was worth the teeth I had to hock!!
