    Tips for dagger purchase

    Hi Guys,

I ran a add in the paper and someone called me saying they have a dagger from his uncle that was in the war. He explained it as having a metal sheath maroon handle and some sort of german inscription on the blade. He also said there is a swaztika on the base of the handle. Sound familiar? I was thinking SA. Any quick tips for not getting burned on one of these?

    Thanks,

    Erik

    Hello Eric,

I'm new at this too, but would recommend that you peruse www.lakesidetrader.com. He has general information about SA daggers and also some for sale, to help you know what they're worth.

      Here's my opinion

Best thing you can do is take a digital camera with you. If it's a standard SA when you get there, no problem. Sometimes they could take on a purplish/brown color on the early anodizing...but the swastika won't be on the base of the handle! That would be where you'd expect an RLB or army/luft or other type. If you don't recognize it right off, or if you have suspicions, take pics! Lots of them! We'll let you know what you have and what it's worth! If the seller won't let you or pressures you to buy now or never, PASS!

Let us know how you do!

The "...swastika on the base of the handle" is throwing me. If it is an SA, the (eagle and) swastika would be in the center of the grip. Could be an Army or 2nd Model Luftwaffe dagger with a dark grip, or the seller could just be lousy with descriptions!

You might look through this Forum at the threads on the different dagger types and print out a few pages and/or make some mental notes before you go to look at the piece.

        Good luck,

I have been trying to look thru some threads to get a idea. He may have just been confused. He was going off memory. Hopefully it will turn out okay. Thanks guys and I will keep you updated.

I would suggest either Tom Wittmann's or Tom Johnson's web sites. Both have a large variety of daggers to view which would maybe assist you in identifying whatever the guy has.
