SA Tiegel Karl TIEGELWERK Solingen Markings

    Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knew why this SA had two different makers marking?

Is there any significance between the two.

I have only seen the RMZ 7/81 marks not this one.

    Thanks

    Hi renm,

What appears to be confusing you is the inclusion of the word "Solingen" in your description of this SA dagger. The cutlery firm of Karl Tiegel known as Tiegelwerk was located in the Riemberg Section of the City of Breslau in Silesia, with no connection to the City of Solingen in North Rhine-Westphalia.

What you are showing us is an example of a very rare SA dagger -- so rare that it is rated at #10 on the McSARR list! This dagger was part of the early production in response to the first orders for SA daggers placed with cutlers at the end of 1933, which was prior to the RZM system of quality control and licensing becoming fully operational. When the RZM system did finally come online by 1935, all Party-recognized and licensed cutlers had received their license numbers and such numbers replaced their company logos on their products -- logos such as is found on the reverse blade of your dagger. By 1935 SA daggers manufactured by Tiegelwerk were being produced bearing their license number of RZM M7/81.

Hope this is helpful information for you. Cheers,

    Br. James

        Br. James ,

Not sure how I messed up and put the solingen on the thread title, The SA is from Riemberg at Breslau, Silesia . That was my fault. Thank you so much for helping me with the question. I guess my SA is a first run prior to the RZM system. So if only 1000 SA were produced is there a way to figure out how many were marked RZM M7/81 or like the one I have? The way i am reading your post it was only produced this way a little over a year.

Thank you again for answering my question.

        And tobau thanks

        RM

Not a problem, RM...all is well! Question: On the reverse lower crossguard is there anything die-stamped, like a two or three-digit code? If so, that will tell us that this piece was probably part of the original production by this cutler and also which SA-Gruppe ordered this piece and where this particular dagger was shipped when completed.

Sorry that I have no information on production totals; that would have been in the records of Tiegelwerk...if they survived.

            Thanks for the reply.

It only has a "S" on the cross guard as shown in my picture. I like to buy a strap hanger because it is missing. Would anyone know which one would have been on this SA. I guessing not one with RZM on it.

              Thanks, RM,

This dagger was made for an SA-Mann serving in SA-Gruppe Schlesien, and the HQ of this SA Group was Breslau. That means that SA-Gruppe Schlesien chose a home-town cutler to produce their daggers. Very interesting!

              Good all around!

Rarely seen maker that's beautifully conditioned with great patina. The gruppe mark "S" further ties it to Breslau which is a very nice connection. That's a desirable dagger.

Looks like a nice early SA dagger etched with the makers mark and stamped with the SA group stamp „S“ for Silesia
