    LAH General Sword and Dagger

Gentlemen, I'm trying to determine the approximate value of an authenticated LSSAH General's sword and dagger who commanded the LAH artillery . I posted some pictures on the gdc forum a long time ago and will post some here shortly. Both were authenticated by Tom Johnson, rough and tough, can anybody give me a ballpark number...working on the camera to get some new pics, should be soon, just trying to understand this market as I consider some additional investment in it . thanks

The value depends on several factors...first and foremost, how are the sword and dagger tied to the individual in question? Are they marked with his SS number, his name or initials?

Secondly, the condition of the pieces will come into play.

Next, the pattern/model of the sword and dagger...i.e., is is a lionhead sword, is it an SS officer pattern, does it have a plain blade, a Damascus blade, a presentation/dedication on the blade?

Is the dagger a standard 1933 model SS dagger, or is the chained officer pattern? Better yet, is it an SS honor dagger? Does it have a plain/Damascus/dedicated blade?

The final thing to keep in mind is that "personality" pieces are very difficult to assign a real value to. My favorite quote on the subject comes from fellow Texan Ben Swearingen. When he was recalling the events around the purchase of the Sepp Dietrich sword, he said he knew he paid the right price because he "...was not willing to pay a penny more and the seller would not take a penny less.

Photos would help, but IMHO the answer will be very subjective.

    Good luck,

Skip, Thanks for your gracious and prompt reply, the sword and dagger are marked with the ss number which identifies the SS General..Walter Staudinger , in addition I own his tunic and overcoat, condition on both the sword and dagger is excellent, it is an SS officer pattern sword with a plain blade, but includes a cloth "cover" for the sword with the initials, the dagger is a chained officer, the photos will be coming very soon as I work out some technical difficulty. Thanks again for your prompt reply and interest

Gentlemen. I apologize for a mistake I made in referencing a name , Tom Wittman ( not Johnson) personally inspected and authenticated this SS sword and dagger as original. As soon as I square away some technical issues, I will post some pictures

        Best regards

Gentlemen, here are some pics of this, this was sent to Tom Wittman and authenticated as 100% original to LSSAH General Walter Staudinger who commanded the LSSAH artillery. This came as a grouping along with his tunic, trousers, overcoat, etc. Any comments appreciated as I am attempting to determine the value.
          Thanks

                    Hello Dave,
A long time SS edged weapons expert taught me that you should be careful when buying items that is attributed, especially when the serial numbers can be linked to someone more famous. Obviously, fame is directly proportional to price premium and fakers would take advantage of that. This is not the case here.

Since this belongs to a SS general who served in the LSSAH, not someone notable (am I mistaken?), I am not sure how much more of a premium you can assign over the basic value of the dagger and sword. To be honest, if I see another dagger and sword, in the same condition but is not attributed, I would price yours with a 5-10% premium. My opinions only.

                      Dave,

The SS number and the Wittmann authentification are good to have. Since you already own some of the good general's other items, the sword and dagger are probably worth more to you than another collector. With that in mind, completing the grouping by adding the edged weapons will almost certainly make the entire grouping more valuable. How much more is anybody's guess.

Down the road, the grouping will hold its value and will likely increase in value, but remember that the market for the more expensive items and or groupings is somewhat limited. If you buy the edged weapons, do it because you will enjoy owning them.

                      Best,

David, a nice representative Himmler can be had for about $9,000. The really mint varieties run up to about $12,000.

There you go David. Its virtually a direct comparison IMHO , these 2 items to help enrich your grouping or a mint Himmler.Depending on condition the Himmler probably will work out slightly cheaper. But the mint Himmlers tend to stay around on dealers lists I have noticed.
