Sad to see an early Herder piece in such rough condition...though the blade looks like it's been polished within an inch of its life. This is a piece from the SS Distribution Center in Berlin. Too bad it wasn't taken care of over past decades. Sad...

I can see the pics now.
You can try to gently clean the crossguards.
Normally I would say not to do this but in this case it will bring the dagger back to life I think. The dirt on the guards is not patina. It's just dirt.
Wipe it off and the dagger will become more presentable.
Same as for the fittings on the scabbard.
The body of the scabbard is what it is. Nothing you can do on that rustpitting...

No doubt an original Herder. You can't do much to the scabbard shell, but cleaning the dirt from the crossguards will improve the look a lot. Blade still has a nice crossgrain and shows the typical Herder etching features.

                    Daggers have less value now.
                    Sad.

Dirt does not add any value. Patina does.

Looks much better now don't you think?
I'm happy you followed my advice.
But watch out... don't do more. Especially never use steelwool or so. Always cotton tisues to avoid scratches.

                              Hi BR WW,

Looks a lot better with the fittings cleaned.

The blade is in pretty good shape with cross grain visible.

It depends how far you want to go with this but the scabbard could be fixed.
I have done many of these where the scabbard is stripped down to the bare shell, filled and then repainted. Your dagger is an early type that had an 'anodised' type scabbard and this cannot be re created but I have managed to repaint scabbards and then use a metal polish to dull down the finish and leave it similar to an anodised type.

I know most collectors would say leave alone but with something this far gone for me a restoration job is a possibility.

Anyway nice honest early SS dagger.

                              Ian
