It looks like there is corrosion underneath the etched oval on the left side. If that's true, it wouldn't bode well for the piece's veracity. Anyone else see that?

        Makers Mark

Looks pretty good. Could you send a pic of the makers mark if you get a chance?

                Walter,

Those are the areas on the blade that I was referring to, they look like corrosion spots that are underneath the etch.

Those corrosion spots as Billy pointed out are suspicious. For this piece I would really need it in hand. Maker mark is correct for me for this piece. IMO I would reach out to DD Harris for final approval. He's the E Pack guy. Not that you aren't John Z

I have two Pack Pioniere etches, one of them is a little rough around the edges like this one. The one posted here has this black gunk or paint on the spanner nuts... indicating some kind of touch up or rework to me.

On the one hand, I like it, on the other there are a couple of things pointed out here and the spanner bolts that do bug me.

Let's see what DD has to say about this.

To me, spanners in & of themselves are fine, assuming all else is as it should be. But the presence of spanners, in the event of a concern, only strengthen the fear that the blade could have been taken down & postwar etched.

Not saying this is a bad blade, per se, but the pictures do seem to show multiple areas of what appear to be corrosion underneath the etch template. This is stated as an objective opinion with nothing to gain or lose in the question, but it would be a concern for me considering the rarity of the etch, the fact the hilt has spanners & the overall quality of fakes emanating from the East.

I would also like to hear DD's opinion on it.

                        B:

The spanner bolts and nuts are not the issue to me... they look normal. What I do not like is the black paint or gunk on the nuts indicating to me that this has been messed with.

I think it was either a few spots of concentrated acid or it was left on those places a bit longer. Everything else looks fine to me.
