    Kriegsmarine portepee

    Hi
I just got this krigsmarine dagger today.
Just out of the woodwork, it have never been in a collection before.

I noticed that the portepee is not just a regular.
    What is it??

The portepee appears to be the correct later nylon variety with the contrasting gold colors in the slide and stem.

        Hi
I do not collect daggers, so this is not my area.
I was searching the web, and i think tat most of the portepee that are on the KM dagger is in silver. i was not abel to find any in gold with these silver threads.
But maybe i didn't surch enough..

Jacob, If it isn't nylon, this portepee was probably originally silver. The earlier portepees had a a fairly high silver content and actually turned the gold color with age. The portepee on my navy is gold as well and I wouldn't be overly concerned. It looks like a nice piece.

I attempted to take a photo of mine for comparison, including the Wittmann "Cat's Anus" acorn. Unfortunately it's cloudy and the photos still make mine look more silver than it is.

Hmmm... I think it's a silver portepee but am not sure if the "gilting" is ageing or tarnish. It almost looks like something was "painted" on for a lack of a better word. Would need better pics of it to tell.

Either way as Larry said, a very nice piece.

The zigzag design on the stem and slide was unique to the nylon Navy portepee. They are described and shown in Wittmann's Navy book on pg's. 294 and 333.

While I would not argue this in the case of a nylon portepee, I know Skipper has one that actually has a thin strip of silver medal braided in with the theads on the acorn's stem. It gives the same zig zag design, but is certainly not nylon. The metal strip has toned almost black and makes a really interesting contrast to the silver thread. Perhaps Skipper can post a photo.

                    Hi

The portepee is nylon, and it is gold with zig zag silver imbroided.
