I have never been much interested in daggers, but came upon this on a Web auction at a fair price. Not the best of condition but complete, and un-cleaned. Is the maker ALCOSA a common one?

The AWS mark is the last of Alcoso's wartime marks, Al / Co / So for Alwxander Coppell, Solingen. I don't believe Alcoso is particularly rare on a 1st Luft but I don't remember seeing this particular mark on one before.
The condition is not great, but it still has character. What is considered a good price?
Be careful with daggers, they can be rather addictive. I started with one & it's been all downhill since.

$375.00 seems a fair price for this piece, given it's condition...and I think this piece is nearly in "Relic" condition. Another consideration when purchasing artifacts is whether you are doing so in order to increase your own collection, or as a dealer for resale. IMO -- strictly as a collector and not as a dealer -- a First Model Luft in this condition would not be worth my while, since when I buy an artifact it is 'for keeps' and not for an interval until I can resell it. First Model Lufts in fine to excellent condition are readily available in the market, though you will pay three or four times the amount you paid for one of them. But the blade will be bright, the gilding will be present and the leather grip wrapping and on the scabbard will be intact and beautiful. IMO adding a piece in this condition to one's collection will only last as long as it takes to come across another piece in much better condition...and then it starts all over again! I think it is always advisable to buy the best example one can find of an artifact, and if you can't afford it now, take comfort in knowing that, whenever you can afford it, pieces will still be available.
Just my opinion, of course! Cheers,
Br. James
