    German Made Cossack Shaska

I bought this today from a local antique shop. The dealer told me he had purchased it from an older couple who were originally from Germany. He was told that it was issued to Cossack collaborators and made by the Germans. Has anyone seen one of these before?

It has a marking and serial number on the handle and blade. The markings are: V.F.5 and the serial number is: K7036. The bayonet has Soviet markings but a different serial number. I have attached photos below:

Still another dealer's "story" worthy of getting tossed in the trash can (IMO) . I have seen some very similar ones like this and they were all postwar Chinese or Asian manufacture. Sorry. FP

I don't see much to be gained by going into details (for the fakers who are reading this) but I collect and still have my reference examples of both WW II and earlier German and Russian EM cavalry swords. Also having seen for sale from Asian websites many different versions of fake Cossack swords - including some supposed German ones. FP

Does anyone else feel this way? I just want to make sure before I try to get my money back. I can post more photos if needed.

Good suggestion. Short and and depending on what is for sale at the moment - educational. FP

Sometimes having the Chinese bayonet swapped out for a Russian one usually in the U.S. (not uncommon) being added to the "story" (which is worthless). All in an effort by to try and convince a buyer that a supposedly TR period sword is legitimate. Passing along a suggestion to those who are interested in acquiring legitimate period items. Who are OK with doing a little homework/study of the combat arms of Germany and Russia - swords, rifles, bayonets, pistols etc. To see how they were made and marked which did change as both nations over time were severely stressed in creating arms for their military forces. I dont see the pictures, but the scabbard looks suspicious like mentioned by others, the bayonet M91/30 is a origin postwar refurbishment, already avialable some years ago from romanian and ukrainian old depots. b.r.Andy

Sometimes situations like this don't always end as well, so I'm really glad that everything worked out for you. With the attached (fairly scarce color) in use photo showing the German uniformed (mostly) Cossacks carrying their Shashkas on their persons via a diagonal strap, versus the German cavalry saddle mounted method.
