    Brass M36 Daggers

On occasion I will see M36 daggers with what appears to be brass base metal crossguards. What are members thoughts on such daggers?

I believe brass is under the nickel silver as I have ran across some cross guards on SS daggers that were so heavily polished that you could see the brass metal peeking out under the silver.

Thanks Jeff I wonder why none of the big names never have brought it up in reference books? Also what about the chain are they ever brass?

Yes I have seen brass chains. But that is the brass base metal underneath the silver that peaks through after heavy polishing.

The thing to look for IMO in not just the brass, but also some of the silver chains (not to mention the many new East European types) - is are they cast or are they stamped from the original set of dies? With the PW cast brass example here having not only differences from the accepted types, but also differences between it and other links in the chain set. FP

                  Brass Scabbard Screws

I have seen brass scabbard screws on a very early M36. The lower crossguard is also benchmarked 0.

Yesterday I went and looked at the brass dagger.Unfortunately it was an obvious fake.

The only dagger I remember seeing with a brass base is some NPEA scabbards and some 2nd model Railway daggers. Neither of them are original either, I would not trust any brass based edged weapon. With the exception of the obvious for example; Navy daggers off the top of my head.

Your earliest production army daggers had brass based hilt fittings and scabbards.

I agree but not on chained SS.
