I found this knife some years ago and bought it purely so that I could work out what the movable catch behind the knuckle guard was for. As far as I could see.. nothing. The blade was not removable. Any suggestions? Sorry for the grainy pics.

Is the tang peened at the pommel?
I suspect that since the handle slabs are mounted with screws, once you remove the slabs, the catch may prevent the blade from being removed from the guard.
