    RAD EM Hewer

    Hello All,
I'm looking to pick up an RAD hewer and wanted to ask the forum for an opinion.
Is blade condition the most important factor in determining value? I've seen many RAD's available and the early models with the brass plated nickel are pricier. If a later model has a higher quality blade would that make it as, or more collectible. I'm not a seller I'm buying to hold on to the piece. Thank you for any and all responses. -Jim

CONDITION, CONDITION, CONDITION. I think I speak for most of us.

        Hi Jim,

As Reichsword said, condition is so important, and especially when considering the purchase of a permanent addition to one's collection. But to me, originality is just as important -- meaning that the piece dates from the period intended and that all of it has been together since it left the factory. And I also value a sense of the piece's age and usage; I am not one who has built a collection of pieces that appear to be in the pristine condition that they were when they were first created. Some tell-tale proof of age, to me, is another hallmark of the originality of the piece.

Just some personal thoughts, my friend. Good luck to you!

Buy the earliest, in best condition, at (naturally) the best price.

Many later mid-period and late example in great condition, very few early ones.

Condition is probably even MORE of an issue when concerning RAD enlisted hewers, as from my understanding, they're one of the few, if only (w/ the exception of the HJ Fahrtenmesser), types that were actually designed for USE (other than simply swinging off your hip). Most RAD em's you'll likely encounter have sharpened blades w/ some condition issues, from honest period use, (if nothing else), hence finding one UN-sharpened, and in exceptionally nice shape will most definitely add to its overall intrinsic value, in my honest opinion. Good luck!

                Thanks Milton,
I actually found an unsharpened Eickhorn in near mint condition. Really a nice example. I appreciate the reply. Thank you
