I guess that period jeweler will never leave breast plating in a way that it covers the details like we see here.

That brings me to believe it's not period-plated piece.

It shouldn't be hard to check if it's silver or nickel, also.

Thank you guys for the continuing interest,
Unfortunatly, I did send the piece back today to it's owner,
so I'm sorry to be unable to say more about the asked questions.

One of the problems wasn't the thickness of the plating. Plating is usually fairly thin. This is not a problem as good plating depends on the quality of the polish on the metal. Unfortunately the base metal parts were carelessly buffed before plating. Too bad.
An opinion should be the result of thought, not a substitute for it.

Its too bad you had to give it back to its owner, those steel alcoso naval daggers are pretty rare in their own right.

I have one that unfortunately has a little pitting on the tip of the blade. i got mine when i first started collecting about 15 years ago and it has that weird nickle look to it and its that way from day one,i can look at parts of it with my loupe and you can find the original gilding on it (long gone now) .

What i have noticed on those is that they always have plain blades so maybe ill find a nice replacement someday, thank you for showing your dagger!!!
