unissued portepee's question

Amongst a collection of items that my dad brought back from WWII are two portepees. Both are unused, still are bound by original "ties". I understand that one is likely a German bayonet portepee of the the 3rd regiment 5th Calvary squadron. The other (green) is thus far identified. Would like to confirm what the two are. also, the value of each would be helpful and appreciated. and, a general question is: do portepee's that are "unissued" carry a higher desirability than one that is "open".

I know that anyone willing to help will need a photo....I'm still trying to figure out how to attach a photo.

Unissued vs. issued depends entirely on the buyer's needs. Some guys collect accouterments on their own while others want to add knots to daggers & bayonets. I think an unissued knot, in general, would bring more of a premium because it is scarcer as an item. I have a number of unissued Polizei & Feuerwehr knots that I'll never open to put on a bayonet so they just sit there

I have an unissued army portepee . I can't put it even on my most mint dagger.
I prefer specimens with a little age,

Cavalry knots had leather straps, your blue and white one is for 4th Co. Infantry and the green one is for Staff. I can't post pictures at the moment, but If you Google "portepee color chart" you can find a period chart showing the color combinations.

I like to have a frog and knot with a bayonet, and for all three pieces to match in patina and wear. It's not hard to find unused knots, but finding some that look like they were used, but not abused, is tougher. Having the string still attached definitely adds to yours. As a reference you could check ebay and see what they go for. In my experience, I've seen ones in that condition but without the tie go for around $50 - $75.

really appreciate the input. having the correct id of unit is helpful and will keep me from misrepresenting as I move forward. by the way is this the right forum for me to post questions re a copy of frogs I have to learn about as well?

Knots were for Infantery, Artillerie and Marines, not only Infanterie.
Better: for the hole Army without the cavallery.

white - blue - white = 4. Kompanie or 4. Batterie Artillerie-Lehrregiment (normal Artillery has not this combination)

green - white - green = Stab I. Bataillon

no silver-blue-solver does not exist.

These exemples are made for the walking out bayonet...not for service.

Often they use finespun bright enamel fabric for white... perhaps this is what you see as silver.

with your suggestion re the fabric used I relook at it and can see where that is a strong possibility.......as a matter of fact since there is no "silver" than that is the only possibility since the color is much more "silver" looking than white in appearance.

re your comment about "walking out": thus are you saying that these two portepee examples are appropriate for me to include with the two bayonets shown in the attached photos ?

ps: since taking these photos I've learned that the frogs don't belong with these type bayonets
