    Early Puma Sawback Dress Bayonet?

    I got this as we'll from a friend, all the pieces came back from a veteran lot including a minty early SS dagger and postal dagger!

    What is this one..?

            What you have is supposed to be a fire bayonet with optional sawback blade which is much scarcer than the standard fire bayonet with plain blade. I agree that the configuration of the sawteeth looks odd as do the teeth themselves, I believe this was originally a plain blade bayonet that someone attempted to embellish to make it more valuable. Definitely not well done enough to be 3R production, sorry.

              Another nimrodded /destroyed item...now worth 25.USD if left as it was before the nimrod got his brilliant idea to alter it......maybe 125.or more.

                      It's hard to tell whether it is these dress bayonet an early production, as the Puma Solingen in period from 1935 - 1942 is used only two logo, and they was used only because the same company has production factory in two different locations.

                        The sawback is not cut correctly as would be done at the factory. The span of the saw is too short and the cuts too uneven. Postwar addition for sure.

                          I agree. Cuts are not correct as they are not even angled and they are much to short. Looks like whoever did this got tired of filing.
                          A post war modification for sure.

                            It's not textbook, and sure you can't assure it was war time but why say it's "definite post war" addition

                              I've owned a couple of dozen sawback fire bayonets & handled many more. There is generally very little variation in the quality of the sawteeth on such an item. These items were made at factories where 3R quality control was fairly strict, particularly on a special order item, as a sawback blade would be.

                              Not only are these teeth poorly shaped, the sawback portion of the blade doesn't extend nearly as far down the blade as it normally would. This grinding job was done either by the vet or some enterprising collector after the fact. It's not even close to period standards & as such, would be eschewed by collectors & dealers alike. Not worth very much at all IMHO.
