    Help identifying owner of SS sword

    Hi everyone,

    I've just acquired this sword from Europe. It's an Alcosso silvered lion head.

    Initials are erased from langet, but under hilt is the number 20286. Can anyone out there tell me who this belonged to?

      SS is not my forte, but I have never seen such strange numbers/runes at an early SS sabers.

        I can now see the pictures. While these numbers are easy to criticize, especially on one of these sabers, they show up in all different ways on daggers too. Professionally engraved, stamped, carved in the wood even! WHile its very possible such a number was added-one could say the same for many many other SS number stampings.........

          The pictures raise a few problems in my mind.

          The first being the erased initials on the reverse langet. If they were indeed applied to a factory silvered hilt and then later removed we would be seeing brass as the silver finish would be removed also. The plating is not very thick and would not show silver where the monagram was removed.

          Secondly the numbers look to have been applied with a rotary tool such as a dremel. Poorly at that.

          Sorry for the bad review. Someone jacked up a nice Alcoso saber IMO.

            I'm not an expert on SS edged weapons but honestly, I don't like the look of those numbers. If all else was in order, perhaps they wouldn't bother me so much it what we have here is a sword that seemingly becomes an SS sword with the addition of some numbers & a sword knot. That very fact would make me even more skeptical than normal. Sorry man.

              Gentlemen the points made are noted. One of the more interesting aspects of the alleged one of a kind “Kaltenbrunner” SS sword was that it had the man’s name all over it. And his SS #. Like he needed to positively ID it if someone stole it from him.

              So here we have a supposed SS saber with an ID number on it. And an erased set of initials that already ID’d it as belonging to someone.

                If there is no way to prove that the ID #s on SS daggers/swords are period made, what good does it do to trace them to an individual?
