What is This? Supposed Boot Knife.

This is on ebay, what is it a knife with erroneous maker marks and stamps or just? At first glance I thought a cut down Chassepot but then I saw no button or mortise.
    cheers Robert

        Greetings Robert,

The blade is a cut down German extra seitengewehr (Dress/walking–out) M1871 Bayonet. It would have originally been a bayonet for wear for ceremonial use or when in dress uniform; when a real bayonet would have been unnecessary (these “dress” variants weigh substantially less). Most extra seitengewehr bayonets are quite flimsy as they were ornamental and privately purchased items. Depending how much you wished to spend you could get all sorts of etchings and other personalizations on them. Some may be mounted on the appropriate rifle, but most are purely ornamental and have no ability to be fixed.

I did a thread here on this seller’s “work” he’s been busy and simply loves to stamp both original pieces and new made reproduction s with all sorts of erroneous markings. But his ca caa sells and does so consistently too. Here’s some more of his awesomeness… Njoy http://www.warrelics.eu/forum/bayone...thread-453520/

        Regards,

        Lance

I would think only the handguard is made of Extra SG1871, the blade looks wider and is most real a knife blade, added with crosspiece to the handgrip, the stamping is not old, certainly made post WW2.

Thanks guys now I know. So any collecting value has been greatly reduced by the stampings. Lance I just read your link to War Relics this guy is certainly busy with his fantasy markings. He has ruined many an edged weapon nothing more than a vandal.
              thanks Robert

                Greetings Robert,

The way I see it is he (or she?) is at least consistent with their shenanigans, so it's not a complete train wreck. But, that is why I started to collect examples of their work, now I'm able to post them as a collection and remove any doubts about their origins.

                Regards,

                Lance
