I have this K98 bayonet and I was wondering what I can do to restore this piece or at least clean some of the rust up. The good news it that it is matching numbers!

Thanks for your input, do you think the spots of rust on the blade need to be given attention? I have heard of red rust being very bad.

Oxidation is a chemical process.
Just keep your bayonet in a dry place, away from moisture, and oxidation will not emerge any more.

I find that the light use of 000 or 0000 steel wool on M98 bayonets works very well in removing surface rust (mainly the red) and enhances the bluing without any real damage to the piece. Depending on pits, I use light oil with the steel wool.
The damage is already done from poor storage, so let's remove some of the problem (Dirt with the rust that attracts moisture) to prevent any further degradation and the original German blue really responds well. REMEMBER: DON'T PUT A LOT OF PRESSURE ON THE STEEL WOOL. GO EASY. I have used this on hundreds of German M98 Field Bayonets with great results.
