Could it be one of the tools used by a butcher that works at the field kitchens?
I see that the wooden grips are having diagonal cuts, this indicates to me that they were used for cutting and slicing in to flesh, and through these diagonal cuts the user could have a better grip when working with meat that is bloody.
Same as a with a trenchknive, these cuts provide better grip.
I am just thinking about it, i could completely be wrong, but i would like to know more about these... I like them.

Blade looks similar to HJ or scouting knives I see now... puzzles me more now.

                    Hello Reibert,
                    A very nice example!
Is the photo you included a clue?
The blade is very similar in shape to a Fallschirmjaeger's gravity knife.

Okay, now that i read the suggestion that the blade looks similar to the fallschirmknive, i can see that i am completely wrong about my thinking that it might be a kitchenknive of some sort now.
That is one of the main reasons that i joined this forum, to learn and compare items of interest.
Still am very curious what this knife was used for and by what kind of soldiers...

                        Hi, Ralph !

No, the phoograph/portrait of the soldier of the Wehrmacht-Luftwaffe is saying nothing.

Christian Méry reffered this pattern knife to as "air crew knife" in his book, "German combat knives 1914-1945"

                        @ Achtung!
If this pattern knife is, (was), a "Kitchen knife" I´m pretty sure, we all have seen much more of them over the yrs. !

In my opinion this is a very scarce, and, seldom seen knife.

The purpose of this pattern knife maybe will be cleared, if a period photograph appears ...

                        Cheers,
                        R.

By looking at the blade, the thing that i noticed is that there is a small "cut out" at the beginning of the blade from the handle, could that be a point where a pilot in disstress when hanging from a chute could put the chute rope in and than slice it through while pulling the knife towards himself to be sure of a fast and good cut?
This is a feature that i have seen by several Fallschirmmesser...
