    Hello Ian,

There are indeed fakes out there and it would be worth your while to read over old threads to get up to speed on what is good and what is not. You can do that through the use of the Search tool located at the top right of the page.

Another good method for learning is to view (and perhaps purchase from) known authentic examples such as offered by Paul Hogle (lakesidetrader here on the forum) on his web site.

If you buy a dagger privately make sure to photograph it well, start a thread, show us the photos and wait for a response before committing your hard earned funds. Any reputable seller will allow photos to be taken. If they won't then walk away.

    Regards,
    Stu

In addition to what Stu said about there being outright fakes out there, there are also parts pieces out there which are often sold as the genuine article but in reality are worth less in the collector market. Good advice to take pictures & don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions. Good luck!

        Hi Ian,

Welcome among us! Stu offers excellent information to any new dagger collector; the field contains many mines and traps -- read fakes, forgeries and opportunities to waste your money. On the other hand, there are fine and reputable dealers out there in the USA and overseas who proudly display the "Max Show" logo on their websites, which means that they subscribe to the high standards of militaria dealing that are required in order to show that logo. Lakeside Trader is certainly one of those dealers with a fine reputation, as are Thomas Wittmann, Thomas Johnson, Bill Shea (dba 'The Ruptured Duck') and many more.

I wish you well as you enter this exciting new realm of collecting; I'm sure we will see you here for many years to come!

I fully agree with Stu. Ask pics and buy from people with a good reputation. Google names/stores before making a decision... It will save you a lot of money!
Stay away from Snyder's Treasure, Ioffer,...

About Lakesidetrader/Paul Hogle: This guy, IMO, is the best here in Canada! I will only buy from him because I know his stuff is 100% original. I bought one NSKK dagger from his store and I've got one SS coming my way. His prices are reasonable and shipping is fast (5 days from Ontario to Alberta).
Have a look at his website. He has pages where he explains what to look for when buying SS or SA daggers... Very informative and helpful if you're new in the business.
