K98 How to stop and remove rust

i resently purchased a slighty rusted k98 i would like to keep it from rusting and stop the rust what can i do to stop this rust ?? any ideas or threads that have info on this i will post pictures later so you get an idea of the issue with it !!

The blade looks like could be only oiled, the scabbard was probably painted over, so it was probably little better condition as is the pommel area, there should apply a oil and gently weep out with 000 steel wool, is better do no scratces there, the blueing is probably already gone.

thanks for getting back but i am a little confused what your saying what should i do to stop the spread of the rust other then oil !! and use 000 steal wool to remove a little rust ?? the blade is actually not bad except what is shown in the one image and is the freshest rust on the whole and is only thoose few spots !! any bodys advice or ideas would be great espically if somebody has tried it before and had succes because i thier are a lot of rusted one like this out thier !!

Each to their own of course but for a combat bayo in that condition I'd clean it up with Pre-Lim then coat it head to toe with Renaissance Wax and call it a day. I'm also a fan of storing edged weapons outside their scabbards.

Here is a link to a supplier of the mentioned products. A very small amount of Ren Wax goes a very long way.

Yes it could help, but the pommel area rust is too heavy for this probably. There i would use a steel wool with oiling and patience by long time removing of rust.

You are correct, if the owner desires to remove that heavy rust he will require more than Pre-Lim..

I base my suggestion on the belief that the heavy rust has stabilized. I simply wouldn't go to the extent of trying to take it off. I think it will do more harm than good to try. That's why I suggest just giving it a light clean and sealing it up.
