numbered tang 2nd Luft, no maker

Any comment on this marking on a tang of a 2nd Luft? No maker. Looks like 459

Got the dagger from the son of the original vet owner. Unfortunately it is missing a ring on the scabbard. It must have slipped off, that is odd isn't it? Is there any reason to try to look for a repair?

Now that I have the handle loose, I cant get the handle seated, it needs to go on another 1/2. I am afraid to force it. Just leave it alone or try to do something.

Might well be a plaster filled grip Dan. They can bust up pretty easily and it is not recommended to disassemble them.

The celluloid grips were filled with wet plaster and then the tang was inserted with the pommel then tightened down. You could try turning it as it may only fit one way round.

It came off so it is reasonable to assume that it should go back on.

The scabbard bands were press fitted and it is not the first dagger I have seen with one missing. It is what it is!

The number stamped in the tang has no significance.

The grip is not plaster filled but looks like it is hollow and has an Oak plug that slips partly out. It would seem there is a hollow cavity between the outer grip and the wood plug inside.

          I couldn't agree more. 100%

2nd lufts many times have a problem getting that pommel snug on the grip and facing forward again. Not a good idead to disassemble any dagger as you may now need to build yourself a 'spacer' to secure the dagger properly.
