Opinions on a Ground Rohm SA dagger

Hey guys,

I've got a friend offering me this ground SA dagger as a trade.

Wondering if there's anything I should know about this beforehand.

The daggers scabbard is dented in multiple spots on the silver all over with what looks like a hole punch that also show up on the reverse of the handle as circular marks in the wood. The handle is also cracked from the hilt about 1/3 way up to the eagle.

The makers mark on the hilt is HA and there's one on the blade as well but i neglected to take a picture and cant remember the name....sadly I also did not get a shot at the ground spot but needless to say there was nothing there but grind marks.

Other than that the wood is pretty bare, I haven't handled a lot of these but there seems to be almost no shine to the wood in comparison to the others I've seen

Hi, and welcome among us! I'm afraid that the photos you've provided are insufficient for appreciating the dagger you're interested in, though it has obviously had a hard life. Someone has mistreated it to a great extent over the past years, as you've mentioned. From the photo, the grip does not appear to be a good fit to the lower crossguard; this may indicate that they weren't 'born' together. There is nothing here to verify that this is a ground Röhm piece since you did not photograph the blade's reverse. And the "Ha" on the reverse lower crossguard is not the maker's mark, which would be found below it on the blade itself; "Ha" is the code for SA Gruppe Hansa, which is the origin of the order for this dagger. Without more and better pix, this is all I can offer...sorry.

thanks, I will try to get some better pictures asap. the whole feel of the dagger was a little weird....allthough the grips that had the same marks as the scabbard would lead me to believe they have been together for at least a while. it should be said that this is my 3rd experience even holding one of these .......ill get some more pictures and stop rambling.

My basic question is that I know neither are anywhere near mint condition but would you call this a fair trade based off rarity/condition? The makers mark seem to have also been ground clean off.....?

Hi Greg,

Well, the additional pix don't help very much. The blade may well be from a Röhm presentation piece but one seldom sees the entire maker's mark removed from such pieces, and it is too bad that this one was. The overall condition puts me off, and my previous note on the ill-fitting grip still calls to mind the possibility that this may be a 'parts dagger.' While the EKI you're suggesting as a trade is not in mint shape either, it does appear to be original and it is maker-marked...though I can't clearly make out the mark from your photo. Personally speaking, you can surely do better elsewhere if you intend to keep an SA M-33 in your collection. There are plenty of fine examples to be had...IMO.

I really appreciate your help. The current owner also just admitted to me that the scabbard is not original to the dagger, this leads me to believe you may have hit the nail on the head with the whole parts dagger thing, nothing about this really seems right to me and I've never even owned a dagger of any branch of German armed service.

While I really would like to pick up one as my collection is without I think I'll pass on this obvious put together and keep my ek1 for the time being.
