    98k bayonet review

    Hello,
I got a 98k bayonet by the son of an old man who just pass away.
He had it since the end of the war, so no doubt about, it's original.

But marking are not like what we usually see on common 98k bayonet.

    Some pics: http://k626.at/up/bayonet/
Note that the code 5030 is on the other side of the button

The blade has no date, no serial, and no manufacturer,
    I don't understand the G8334 and the H45.

What can you say about it ?

This is a german export Bayonet S84/98 out of the Portuguese contract from 1941.

    typical numbers.

Correct Portuguese name is Bayonet Modell 937 or 941.

Like mentioned Sleepwalker a M941 for Portugal, the piece is not matching with scabbard. When the piece was really by the owner from the war, its then the undelivered bayonet, but i personally dont believe similar stories. Is the blade sharpened? looks like repointed on tip.

        Thanks guys!
No the blade is not sharpened, but I confirm that the tip is "worn".

With the information that you give me I can now search the signification of the marking "H 45" and "G 8334"

Andy might have better information, but my recollection is that the letter prefixes were tied to the same serial or accountability number as on the Portuguese export contract rifles. With the later WaA519 Waffenamt being seen at the end of the contract, and those and some of the WaA883 Waffenamted ones without the numbers possibly being something like spares or not delivered. FP

the not delivered ones and used by german formations have no numbers.

            http://www.militaria-datenbank.com/s...d.php?t=136164

This shipment was also stamped with the Army Ordnance WaA883 or WaA519.
The delivery was interrupted from about 23,000 the number of pieces by German requisition in the serial number sequence. So there is a break in the Numbers for Portuguese-Export. After the resumption of the supply, it may still be an I - Block have come . The G-Block surly delivered completely to Portugal.

Lots of this unmarked bayontes from the Portuguese-Contract were found as captuerd material in russian depots.

Certainly it would be great to find detailed info, but i dont know about exact determined pieces of not delivered Portugal contract 1941, the rifles are reported brought back from russian depots mainly in G and H range, so they must be not delivered to Portugal, i believe the bayonets were delivered and serialed with them. The non serialed pieces are other bunch. I dont known about I range.

It was because of the rifles that I originally became interested in the bayonets. With in the U. S. the Portuguese rifles fairly rare, and the bayonets at one time perhaps even harder to come by. Which was long before the “Iron Curtain” became a thing of the past. Which is not to deny that at least a portion of the later rifles originally contracted by Portugal were not delivered to them, but instead went to the Wehrmacht. And there even seems to be some evidence that later on some small numbers of ex-Wehrmacht contracted rifles were sent to Portugal.

With an unknown number of Portuguese contract bayonets making their appearance in the U.S. both sometime before, and at or around the same time as some large batches of German sourced ex-Portuguese military surplus arrived. And while it may be a coincidence - with some of both the better condition unserialed WaA883 and WaA519 bayonets, their presence in the U.S. predated by a noticeable margin the imports from the former Soviet Union. the unnumbered still exist unused and heavy used... i find nearly every condition.

There exist a study about the Portuguese K98k send to Portugal and used by German troops.

                  http://forums.gunboards.com/showthre...k-serial-study

The informations cames from russion captuerd material... and material exported from Portugal. The rifles at the end of the F-Block, the complet G-Block and the Beginning of the F-Block were used from German troops and captured.

Can be assumed that the bayonets were with the corresponding numbers also issued mandatory with carabiners, or carbines and bayonets are seen separately?

The article speaks about full H letter block delivered to Portugal, when so its true, this bayonet should be too from Portugal as there is a H block scabbard? Anyone known about delivering the full contract numbers to Portugal?

The study belongs only to the carbines 98k, not to the bayonets. In German use it was not necessary that the bayonet bears the same number like the rifle/carbine.

So there is no Information whats happened with the bayonets.

I learn a lot here. I love this forum :-)

I can confirm that this G coded bayonet was not exported to the Portugal, since I knew the old man, wo lived in the south of France.
I can also tell you that there are other items, like a 98K. A BNZ 4. (so no matching the bayonet serial).
