Need Opinions on odd Hand Guard on Police Bayonet...

I received these photos from someone looking to sell it. The bayonet looks ok, but I've never seen this hand guard before. It resembles those found on Forestry daggers. What do you guys think about the bayonet in general, and about the hand guard as well.

nice weimar clamshell. it was not removed, or some one added the police insignia.

Hi Dave. Thanks for helping id the clamshell. I've never seen an example with this before now. What is your opinion on the police insignia on the grip? I just did some digging and see quite a few out there with the TR police insignia.

It is a dress version of a german police bayonet. As the clamshell shows the Weimar eagle and the grip the later TR period insignia, I assume the wearer added the Tr insignia in 1935/36 - following the new time.
As the scabbard is brown leather it is possibly for a Gendarmerie official. Stag horn grips were very fashionable during 1920´s and 30´s for police and fireservice dress bayonets.

Dzyner, it looks fine and original to me. in many cases the clam shell was removed, like on the 2 i have. and the brown scabbard would indicate rural police. it needs a brown frog too. black would be for city police.

Very nice short police bayonet for the rural polizei. This short bayonet is a private purchase and not a duty bayonet as for longer staghorn police bayonets.

Does the grip eagle have any play in it when touched or is it fixed solid?

I can't really tell if the police insignia was added afterwards, but one should not immediately doubt it because the clamshell guard is still present. The clamshell design continued in production after the introduction of the national police insignia in 1936. It wasn't until 1938 that the order went out to shorten the older long clamshells.

This very nice private purchase Gendarmerie bayonet seems to have a correct eagle.
