Question about bayonet? What I am missing here?

I did not want to post it before it was over, because there was a chance somebody here was going for it. But I just wanted to know what is so rare about this bayonet???

    Thank you
    regards Rajko

Rivet grip sgx 44, better known as the "grey ghost", due to its' phosphate finish. It is at the top of all serious 98k bayo collectors "dream list". A very rare bayo to find, especially numbers matching and in near mint condition. Is it worth the price paid? Obviously several people thought so.

I've seen not nearly as nice sgx bayonets as this one go for almost as much (depending on their condition). A friend of mine who was a very well seasoned collector, used to tell me that if you purchased the best of the best: When it came time to sell or trade, the only thing that the guy you were dealing with could argue with you about was the price. Which I think is not an unreasonable way to look at it, if that is what you are half way serious about in your collecting. FP

this is not a "grey ghost"...

"grey ghosts"are the very much rarer late war phosphated asw44 examples with rivet grips.

Disagree... sgx44 and asw44 bayonets were produced by the same maker, E&F Horster. Both can be found with the same late war phosphate finish and riveted orange bakelite grips and both are considered to be "grey ghosts". The rarest of all is the sgx45. Find one of those and you have found the holy grail of K98 bayos...

no... the only variety who is named "grey ghost" is the asw44 phophat bayonet...because this variety is very rare, only ca. 3000 were made in this last asw Block with phosphate finish = "ghost" (!!!)...

sgx44 arn´t so rare... and sgx allways were phosphated.

the link was a great composition of B. Conkle and J. Jacobi. I can not open... but i own a copy.

"Grey ghost" are the phosphated asw44 examples... i don´t know why someone started call all phosphated S84/98 "grey ghost"(?????)... it is logical that the very rare grey asw44 get this name.
