    SS Dagger

Enclosed pictures of my first SS Dagger, not an area I know much about but one of those items you just have to have one of.

Comments appreciated and also any information on the number would of course be greatly appreciated, if it is recorded anywhere.

Also on the back of the hanger are some letters, any thoughts on what they could mean?

    More pictures to follow.

    Thanks for all input

        a great looking dagger,

No info on the number, Try Ross K. maybe he can find some info on the number.

The letters can be the SS-mans initials.. as I have seen engravings before.

        cheers

        Emil

No problems in my opinion . Clean/original M33 by one of the lesser encountered makers . Falls into that same category as the M7/29 , 120/34 , 121/34 RZM daggers . Early characteristics with RZM mark/code . Good score .

At first look this piece looked good to me -- an RZM-marked M-33 from the later 1930s in very nice condition. Because of the glare on the photo, I could not read all of the numbers shown on the underside of the lower crossguard, so I am unable to research the SS-Mann's number for you. I see the initial(s) you refer to, scratched onto the leather on the reverse of the hanger assembly, but they mean nothing to me; perhaps if the number can be attributed, that will provide further information as to what those letters/initials mean. Then I looked again at the photo of the reverse of the lower crossguard -- the photo that also shows the etched RZM logo -- and I see the Roman numeral "I" die-stamped to the crossguard. The presence of this numeral means that the dagger was a part of the initial order for sidearms placed in 1933-34 through SS District Munich, and that also means that the maker's mark on the blade could not be from the same piece as the lower crossguard is, IMO.

                  The number is 269530.
Regarding this dagger, the lower guard on an 188/35 shows always the roman I.
I never saw them with any other roman number.

                  I like it

                    Hi Rheingold,

Thanks for your response, providing the full SS member's number. I am sorry to say that I have found no information on it, which usually means that the holder of that number was not an officer in the SS. I am not sure what to think about your comment that "the lower guard on an 188/35 shows always the roman I" -- perhaps I need further education on this matter? As Robin Lumsden stated it, "The earliest pieces from the 1933-35 period featured the makers trademark on the blade, a dark blue-black anodised steel scabbard, and nickel-silver fittings with the crossguard reverse stamped “I,” “II” or “III” to denote that the dagger had passed inspection at the main SS uniform distribution centre responsible for issuing it, viz Munich, Dresden or Berlin, respectively.” Is there something amiss here? My own example of the SS dagger, which includes the Eickhorn logo, is marked with the "I" on its lower reverse crossguard. Any further education here will be appreciated! With thanks,

                    Br. James

Don't know why,i guess it's one of many secrets of this time. The RZM 120/34 shows also the roman I. Never saw it with an other number. While the 121/34 doesn't.

But what about the Gembruch,ASSO..daggers,they are non marked on the lower x guard.A different vintage?

                      Regards

Exactly, some early makers never come with marked crossguards.
Looks like we don't know everything yet about how the daggers were distributed.

Thanks all for input on this thread, and shame the number did not come up.

Daggers are all new to me but I'm taking it as a general OK to the dagger in question - I think i'm happy with it anyhow.

                          Thanks

Congrats Tietze on your acquisition. Unfortunately, SS Mann No. 269 530 can not be identified at this time.

                              Enjoy!
