Hi Kurt, thanks for adding the extra photo that I requested.

I am sorry, but it sadly confirms my suspicions; the blade is a repro. The maker mark is far too high on the blade. I thought I had a photo on file of mine, but I don't seem to have one. If no one can post a good one to show you, I will take a photo for you, but it will be next week. The rest of the dagger looks good.

    Cheers, Ade.

Thanks again, Ade. This proves it's important to look past the nice looking handle.

Looks like there are other problems as well, and the engraving on the scabbard is definitely not period.

I just looked thru Wittmanns SS dagger book. In there they show a full Rohm SS dagger that has the larger Eickhorn trade mark and it looks farther away from the cross guard than the small maker marked ones. Since Eickhorn mabe both , SS and SA Rohm daggers I wouldnt discount this due to the distance of the MM to the Guard.

There are more problems with this piece than the trademark.

When the small trade mark was used it was about 2mm from the cross guard.Only the large trade mark was further away. There is also too sharp a central ridge on the blade.Early blades had a softer, rounder central ridge. This one is more like an RZM blade, which is impossible for a Röhm blade.Someone took an original early dagger and replaced the blade with a repro .

Thanks again for everyone's input! If anyone has an early SA dagger with a totally screwed-up handle and no scabbard, I'm in the market for it!

Kurt, if you're looking for a plain, original, SA blade, Tom Johnson usually has a couple on his site. There was often a lot of hand fitting involved, so it's usually not just plug and play. His site is www.ww2daggers.com should you want to browse around. Good luck with your project.

Erich, Could you please expand on your not liking the engraving on the scabbard.

Sure--the style of lettering used, the spacing between the letters, and the use of all capitals look modern U.S.--the type of engraving a trophy shop does with a pantograph--not German pre45 style. I've seen many many engraved and etched III Reich pieces, and IMO this is not one of them.
