    2 German Bayonets for Review

Here are 2 bayonets I purchased lately. The one without a sheath has a crack and is marked Robert Klaus Solingen on the blade. The other is Marked 945 on the blade, X4 1584 on the top, and has a circled z and an m with a square around it on the sheath.

First, if anyone knows exactly what type they are please let me know. Second if you could give me fair prices to try to sell each one for I would appreciate it. I am a college student so I dont have a lot of extra cash so I will probably sell one and keep one for myself. Thank you for your help.

      Hello,

I think these links will get you started.

      and

As to value...that's a tough call. I'd estimate 20 USD each.

      Regards,
      Stu

I would have guessed they would be worth more than that. I have never seen a German k98 for less than $100 or $150 in the US. Maybe they are cheaper abroad though. I paid 80 for the pair and I thought I got a great deal.

I agree with Stu, not much value there I'm afraid. Condition matters and it may be a struggle to break even.

The bayonet with the code "945" is a Vz24 / Seitengewehr 24(t) wich was produced for the rumanien Army.
You can see rumanien accaptence Stemps on the frog stud and a rumanien unit marking on the top of the pommel. This one was never used in the german army.

The German dress bayo would only retail for about 100 USD on dealer sites in North America when found in NM condition with scabbard. Less on the Estand etc. Possibly you were thinking of an S84/98 combat bayo when you felt the value should be higher. Yours, without scabbard, grip plate damage and with the blade in the condition it is would not be worth anywhere near that in my view. As to the second one it's been my experience that European types don't fetch much at all even when in top condition. They are plentiful and not as collectible as the TR items.

Have a look at a site such as Paul Hogle's to start familiarizing yourself with bayo types and value vs. condition levels. Paul's site is a good benchmark as he describes his items accurately. Here's a link...

and here is a link to the home page of a site that is useful when trying to determine just what you have...

I'm sure that with a bit of study you will be able to spot those items where some money can be made through resales.

              Kind Regards,
              Stu

I'd add Old-Smithy's site as another one that's helpful in identifying bayonets. http://old-smithy.info/countrylist.htm Once you know what you have, seeing what they go for on ebay will give you a good idea what you could expect get for it.
