Real or fake etched k98 SS bayonet?

Hello guys, A friend of mine has the opportunity to purchase this bayonet. I think it’s a 60’s post war etched WW2 bayonet but I don’t know enough about German stuff to be sure. Can you guys tell me anything about this bayo? I think the seller thinks its original and is starting the price off at $1000..I told my buddy only go $200..mainly for the novelty of it and the decent scabbard and frog value. The markings on the bayo indicate it’s a 8th SS Cavalry Division Florian Geyer piece. Just the fact it’s marked with such a notable SS Division makes me skeptical. What do you guys think? What's the most he should offer? Please check out the pics and let us know..I dont want him to pass up a real collectors item but I dont want him to be taken either!

As to value, that's hard to say as I suppose each of us views these things differently. I view it as damaged goods and worth no more than what the value of the frog and scabbard would be in your area. Others may view it as a unique collectible and value it as such.

I agree with Stu, an original bayonet with postwar etching tarting it up to make it more marketable. Realistic value is no more than what you'd pay for an interesting letter opener IMHO.

Absolutely a postwar modified bayonet - your friend could consider buying it if he’s OK with $200.00 letter openers ( - that’s a good way to describe them ), or perhaps he is the kind of guy who likes bright shinny things.

But if he thinks he is buying a piece of SS-TR history sooner or later he is going to find out that it’s a postwar fantasy item. Specifically made to generate profits for the guys who took usually “beater” bayonets and made them into this sort of junk. FP
