    KM Dagger Puma

    Hello,

recently I bought this dagger as a beginning of my collection, not knowing much about fakes and originals in these waters :-)...

Now I would really appreciate is someone more knowledgeable than me can take alook at few detailed photos and give me the opinion about authenticity.

The dagger came without portepee, which I bought later and tied properly (at least I think so ;-).

Thank you all in advance for your kind opinions.

    So, here are the pics:

There is a Puma Kriegsmarine dagger for sale on Lakesidetrader.com with a different Puma TM.

This maker is pretty hard to find in Navies, so I defer to the Navy experts to tell us if they used multiple marks, or, if not, which one is right.

Here is the one as you pointed to:
      http://www.wwiidaggers.com/33420.htm

and here is the one like mine:
      http://www.wwiidaggers.com/33176.htm

For the first one's stamp it's said (on http://www.wwiidaggers.com/NVL12.htm):
This choice blade is stamped with a puma cat head, having no diamond around it. It is the same as the stamping I show on page 287. Below the head is the name of the factory and the location city “Puma Solingen”

For the second one it's said (same page, bit lower):
The reverse ricasso is marked with the Puma cat within a diamond. Under the cat’s head is the firm’s name, “Puma” and under the diamond is the location city, “Solingen”.

It seems that there are two different stamps. I'm not quite sure if both are authentic ;-)

Also, lower there is the third one with diamond-less stamp and it's mentioned:
The diamond logo did not come until later in the period

With all that said , the dagger is the real deal and a beauty at that. I've had one of these Puma navies in my collection at one time.

Very nice dagger! I have an earlier period Puma with the sailing ship etch and Puma mark without the diamond. Yours does share many traits with mine and has the very bright gilding that Puma is known for. There gilding seems to last better than any other maker I know, that goes for there swords too. I am still looking for the right hangers for mine that don't cost the same as another dagger!! Well done! Kevin.

I also have a Puma KM dagger with the cat's head maker mark, sans diamond & sailing ship etch although Puma did use both marks on KM daggers. IMHO they made a quality KM dagger.

Hi Citadela, you're a tough player, indeed ;-)...

As I show you on Croatian forum, I'm putting now UV test here, also. Nothing to hide, really. My money, my joy ;-):

I've done the UV test with dagger and porteppe on plain white paper, which glows like a candle under UV light, and after that I put it with two photographs I bought here on WAF recently, one post-war with autograph and another original photo.

For a better contrast, I also put Schutzwall medal aside, with repro ribbon, which also glows a lot.

The dagger IS cleaned, as I can see, and my only concern is the wire around the grip, which looks pretty new to me. But who am I to judge??

No problem with the knot and the grip is 100% Dagger is not all polished up. You can obviously see plenty of the gilt finish and frosting to the pommel.
Start looking thru the Wittmann navy dagger book and you will see what I mean.

This is an old picture who's quality sucks but it at least shows my Puma. The quality of it was so nice, I never looked for another KM dagger. It's still my only 3R KM dagger.
