Interesting looking piece, a combination of the phased out clamshell device & late war elements like the solid grip adler & what looks like a lightweight aluminum hilt. Scabbard fittings seem distinctive, I'm guessing CJ Krebs as a maker, maybe Clemen & Jung.
Occasionally one finds the clamshell on later produced pieces. I have a 35-41 seated squirrel TM blade with a clamshell. I guess that not all of these went in to be ground off. Maybe, it was a personal choice or retirement prior to the switchover date?
Oh yes, I know they exist & were available for purchase & both of your suggestions are plausible. It's just one does not see them so often, particularly with the aluminum hilt. I've never seen one with the aluminum hilt & a solid grip eagle. Not saying it's bad because the combination is of course possible, moreso a curiosity. The only thing that caught my eye was the poor fit on the top of the obverse grip & the overall color of the stag however I believe both could be explained partly by the presumed period of manufacture.
