    Imperial Sword

    Gentlemen

Can you help? This sword has me stumped. Made by Alex Coppel and marked on the spine with W and 91. Simple robust structure with a plane wooden handle so got to be an EMs sword.

I can't find a similar example in the WW1 references so I guess it is an earlier pattern. Can anyone help?

    Many thanks

    James

It is cavalry sword. We had one in kingdom of Serbia but with different crossguard. It was also made in Germany. I am not at the house right now to look up the model.

I think it is a Model 1889 Kavallerie Degen fur Mannschaften - ie private soldiers

It started life as a (government model) enlisted man's KD 89, but somewhere along the way the basket was cut down. But what I found interesting was that the hilt now resembles some foreign contract (?) sabers that used to be seen every so often. But then I found one that was unit marked (Prussian artillery ?). With my assumption being that some of those sabers were expropriated (as some bayonets had been) for German use. FP

You Gentlemen are terrific. Many thanks.

So a KD 89 with a cut down basket. Very interesting.

I can't find any other marks other than the regular German ones on the spine by the hilt. So does this suggest that it remained in Germany and as Frogprince suggests it was adopted by another service.

          Many thanks
