    Craig Gottlieb-SA Birdshead Dagger

I do not know if this is permitted but this is informative and you will enjoy viewing what few have probably seen. Please go to Craig Gottlieb website and go to the daggers/edged weapons section. Scroll down until you reach the SA Birdshead Dagger, pics and description of the dagger are amazing. Actually here is the website.

        Solingen Industrialist's Contribution Dagger

I know where there is one of the originals in a German's hands. He got it from his neighbor in Germany at the end of the war as a gift from the wife in his home town. They were the first Nazi Dagger given out in late 1933 to a handful of industrialists who were large contributors financially to the movement. The one I know of still has the original small chain link hanger. Each one I have seen or know of had an industrialist's name in an inscription on the blade.

Coggy awesome dagger, but looking at yours and craig Gottliebs his scabbard is black while yours is brown, your blade is also scripted and his is not. Yours is awesome, did it come in the presentation case. Have you ever had it appraised. Very nice dagger. Thanks for sharing the pic.

The last time I heard of one like coggy's for 'possible' sale...it was like a wisp in the wind...almost like a rumour...cause then it was gone. Nobody seemed to know to whom - all got quiet.

These rarities make a SA Damascus High Leader by comparison look like a common dagger.

However there are several in advanced collections - but they are never shown to the masses. We are indeed fortunate on this forum to have such a collector in Coggy who will share a rare gem like this with us.

Many thanks for your comments. About 6 years ago this dagger was sold to me as a replica. I bought it because of the quality and workmanship which impressed me as being too good to be a replica. There was a small amount of damage at the time that I could easily repair. I also made the case for it.

The question of is it a replica or an original might never be fully resolved but for me it is a great looking collectable I enjoy having.

I made that hanger and patterned it after the one shown in Tom Johnson's series 'German Daggers of WWII' page 327. It pictures the cased Special Presentation dagger owned by Chip Gambino. I have not found any publications that show any other hanger.
